Sure, I grew up in Chicago. Attended college downstate.

But since the early 90s, it seems Ive spent most of my life in the Southwestern states - between Arizona and California. Enjoy spending time in New Mexico and Texas.

California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. All states that border Mexico. Take the initials together, you get CANT.

Perhaps that will become a neat new acronym when discussing border issues. Were a tribal nation, one of cultures, subcultures, defined by regions.

So...I'm a C.A.N.T. man. Well, you heard it here first.

The Crying Game -

Having attended the fateful game (yeah, the one all the sports radio programs were talking about today), actually both great games at the Thursday Oakland NCAA Tournament, I can tell you it was one of the wildest upsets, followed by one of the oddest spectacles I've ever seen by a player.

UCLA looked dead for about 34 of the 40 minutes in the game. Hadn't scored a basket in the first ten minutes of play. Gonzaga dominated. What struck me to watch their key player, Adam Morrison, was not only his great skill at scoring, but his composure. He impressed me as a player ready for the pros - then the last six minutes kicked in.

Sure, it was easy to see what happened. Gonzaga got into foul trouble - a couple guys fouling out. Poor clock management (using their last time out with 3 minutes left), and UCLA was closing in fast.

But those last twenty seconds were captivating; incredible. UCLA was flawless - doing everything right, and they won.

But during those last twenty seconds, Gonzaga's key player...well, he lost it. Inexcusable, when the game wasn't over, and far from lost. Starts sobbing - all cameras in the arena are on him and his out of control crying.

Then after the game, he goes to the middle of the court, pulls his jersey over his head. It struck us in the stands, like 'hey, look at me, I'm really upset.'

Then this final picture tells the rest of the story - a classy player from UCLA's bench comes over to first see if he's alright, offers to help him up. My friend and I stare on in disbelief, amazement at the scene.

I was at the game to cheer on my Bradley Braves. A team that hadn't made it to the Sweet Sixteen in 51 years. I met people before the game who traveled by bus from the school's hometown of Peoria, IL (about 3 days drive) just to make the game.

Most if not all of the players on the Braves team, as terrific as they were to get this far, will probably never see a professional contract. For them, it was their last moment of glory as basketball players. Morrison on the other hand, the NCAA's top scorer, is expected to go pro. So sure, his last moments as a Gonzaga teammate, but not to pay for play.

Some fans said he showed heart. I think he looked like a spoiled brat. No class, against the many, many players competing who really have something to lose by losing.

Bradley wasn't even close; yet the team came out and waved and blew kisses to their fans. Another class act.

Strange, how competition can bring out the best...and worst in us.

My prediction: Look for a great spoof on this Saturday's installment of Saturday Night Live. Or at least a great honorable mention on 'Weekend Update.'

My alma made it to the Sweet Sixteen!

Bradley University is in the March Madness Sweet Sixteen for the first time in fifty one years - and only the first time in ten years in the NCAA tournament.

Basketball is a big deal at my college - I attended with Hersey Hawkins (he was even in a few of my classes. Nice guy) - for a school of 5,500 students, it was great to have a team do well in our local midwestern conference.

And the talk is their top seeded competitor is one of the weakest in years - so who knows!
And...they are in the Oakland Conference! The big game is this Thursday, in my back yard (Oakland, CA!) - wow what an exciting season for March Madness.

At least in my world. For many others (Big 10, typical matchups...) eh, not so good.

My Take on the Sopranos Season Opener...

Wow - what an opener. One of the most interesting, in my humble opinion.

I've been a fan of The Sopranos since its early seasons. Interesting in talking to people, with their take on the Sunday night opener. Some found it perplexing, others predictable.

Warning: Some Plot Spoilers Follow.

One of the elements that ran constant throughout the program was the theme of randomness.

Random events. There were three incidents of bloodshed, each without cause.

Think about it. Hesh's kid gets beat up - case of mistaken identity. One of the Cappos receives a nice family inheritance (in itself random), and yet it sets a series of dilemmas and squeezes into place leading to him commiting suicide. Then random of randomness - the looney uncle shoots Tony, not even recognizing his own nephew, thinking him an intruder in his house.

Wow. If that's the theme for the season, I disagree with both common thoughts - it will be riveting: consistent yet unpredictible.

I think I like the new INXS..

Im a tough nut to crack on music. Such a personal thing, and I grew up enjoying the music of INXS a lot. Especially the early stuff.

So when I watched the Rock Star show this summer I was interested but skeptical. Didnt see anyone who could really capture the energy and mystique of Michael Hutchings.

But I like this new guy JD Fortune a lot! This new song 'Afterglow' is terrific.

Got me to thinking about other resurected bands, and there's been a history of some success in rock's past. Of course there was Sammy Hagar replacing David Lee Roth for Van Halen (not my favorite era of music, but no question it worked).

There was Brian Johnson who replaced Bon Scott in AC/DC. I dug the old AC/DC; but the new AC/DC was probably more commercially successful (starting with 'Back in Black.)

One could even argue Bruce Johnston replacing Brian Wilson on the road was a critical departure, as Brian was the true voice of the band, opting to stay behind the scenes to create some of their best work.

Other examples come to mind; Ronnie Van Zant's kid brother leading Lynrd Skynrd the last twenty odd years, far longer than the original lineup was ever around.

So who says you can't reinvent yourself? Bottom line: The strength of your name (brand) is a wash. Good catchy music stands on its own.

When you have an opener that sets you apart, that lets you become the chooser of which interactions you wish to pursue, its amazing how that frames your reality.

I'll share some truisms, some real experiences as evidence:

1. I will receive emails/calls from women I've met, months after we've met, because they've retained my unique personal calling card.

2. I will consistently hear genuine statements like this from women: 'thank you so much for taking the time to come up and talk to me' 'thank you for making my day' 'you are one of the most interesting people I've ever met.' They hadn't seen anything yet.

With evidence like this, I don't worry about matters like time. By that I mean I don't worry about conventional timeframes (oh gosh if I dont hear back from her in XYZ period of time than I guess I blew it.)

Why? Because when you are truly offbeat unique, comparing your interaction to the many future interactions you know she will invariably run into in the days/weeks that follow - yours will stand out. BECAUSE YOUVE LEFT AN IMPRESSION by BEING OFFBEAT/UNIQUE.

In fact the more pressure you put on someone to engage you further (lets get together this weekend, call me okay? etc...) the more you push away. However if you create an offbeat, engaging entertaining vibe where a woman feels comfortable - of course she will want to follow up.

That's just one of the reasons its important to be offbeat (not stupid or lame) - but different in talking about yourself as a women seek out, even stalk, because of your great vibe - you've just put yourself on a pedistal.

One of the eight components weve discussed the importance of conveying is comfort.

In a separate article and in the ice breaker eBook, we talked about how you can effectively engender comfort, by both the verbal and non verbal things you say and do.

While it's important to have a list of topics at the ready to talk about, small talk and jokes to fill out the agenda of the evening, and to stay away from topics that bring about 'discomfort' (IE - harsh news stories, date rape, murder), she may bring such a topic up.

I'm going to get into some heavier stuff in this entry. We live in the real world. Bad things happen to good people. As a man seeking a fulfilling relationship, its important to know how to address it should such topics come up on a date, particuarly early on.

In early March 2006, there was a lot news around this bouncer LittleJohn in New York who appears to have been involved in the rape and murder of a young woman outside an evening nightclub. While bouncers aren't school nurses, they are seen as a symbol of trust for women, to come to their assistance should difficulties arise. This incident fractures that trust. I recall an incident a few years ago in San Francsico, when a cab driver raped a woman coming home from a nightclub after hours. Same thing - these are people we trust not to hurt us when we are vulnerable (and/or drunk.)

Should such topics be brought up on a date, by your date, the best approach is to first provide a pat comeback. Say something like, 'you're not going to rape me tonight are you?' That should break the ice. Then offer a segue to another topic.

If she continues on this path/topic, it can get tricky. You don't want to dismiss the topic, nor discuss it at length, however she's obviously looking for reassurance and comfort building. Yet dwelling on the topic can be a real downer.

If the topic continues on her part, more particularly seems to be addressed to you, be decisive then offer another segue.

I'd look at her straight, slow down my body movement, and say, "I don't tolerate violence. My world is filled with calm, and its important for me to know that these things are also important virtues with someone I'm dating."

Rewind. My words don't direct these statements to her. I simply say, "with someone I'm dating," so it becomes a value statement. Saying this decisively conveys your reality - that peace and calm (appropriate words to use in place of more violent words you shouldn't use in an early engagement). Perhaps make a specific statement about the incident like the one I mentioned above (the fracture of trust we place in people who are supposed to help us at a point of vulnerability)

Have other topics at the ready, and offer a harder segue. 'But that topic isn't much fun. I'd really prefer to talk about this great menu. This place is really awesome. Have you ever had this type of Asian Fusion before?" etc etc

If she still wants to talk about it, there's not much more you can do, except judge. Judge for yourself that either she has a vibe that isn't sitting right with her, or unfortunately her reality (right now or permanent - doesn't matter) is too riddled with worry and dread to get past. YOUR reality is that your social time is precious - you want it filled with positive, awesome experiences. A date should make you laugh and rejoice, not be a downer.

Cut the date short; there's not much more to do to salvage the evening. Who knows - she might come around, but the more you persist on this topic the worse it will be for you. I've discussed the importance of having Plan Bs for your evening (I always check in with other friends and see what they've got planned before going out on a date) - drop her off as soon as decently possible, and regroup.

Headlines, Trendlines.

Headlines often affirm what trends and analysts see coming in the horizon. We are in the era of the 'interactive economy;' to ensure success, people want to be active participants in the cultural events.

The prediction of the Interactive Economy was a trendline. The Oscars generating the second lowest viewership (down 10 percent over last year's viewers) is a headline, of sorts. It made the news, but came as no surprise.

While the Oscars will probably never go away, the idea that some shrowded group of experts on filmcraft will hand down their decisions on what the best movies are has become virtually irrelevant. Who cares.

What do we care about? American Idol! A younger generation has grown up with an embedded expectation that they will play an active role in the outcome of cultural choices. American Idol beat out the Olympics in recent weeks, by far. And continues to be the most successful television program on TV. Ironically, Simon represents the voice of 'the town elder,' the voice of so-called reason and expertise in matters of taste and popstar quality. The viewing, voting public loves to say otherwise. Of course Simon knows his role - what good would the program be without the snide antogonist?

MySpace. Blogging. 2.0 WebTools. Talk Radio. The barriers to entry are gone. Anyone with a $300 computer can get on their electronic soapbox and opine about anything.

'Static Mediums' will have a role, but will probably never take the world by storm. Consider satellite radio. Hundreds of formats, mostly commercial free. Yet at present - its a one-way channel. People have seen choice, and there's no turning back.

I lived in London for a semester in college. Loved it. One of the most interesting experiences was going to a corner in Hyde Park, called 'Speaker's Corner.' They say it's where the expression 'get on your soapbox' was created. The rule was you could go the park and say anything about anything, as long as you stood on a box. They expected a little effort, otherwise there would be chaos, and no one would know who was talking, and who was listening.

Who's the speaker, who's the audience?

In an interactive economy - those lines are blurred.

Ice Breaker Not Always Working? Prepare some heavy artillery.

Every once in awhile, you'll come across a challenging situation. Most women are very intrigued by the ice breaker. (My friends call it 'Chick Crack') but you'll run into challenging situations, could be she's the 'alpha male' of the group, showing her indifference, could be she's been hit on all day and sees you as just another guy -

When you get resistance right out of the shoot - you know its not you.

But that's when I pull out the big guns. I call it 'Anti-Stalker' Mode.

I'll immediately say - "Okay please don't stalk me.' Its especially funny if she's rejected you in a loud crass way, because it sounds like she's somehow emotionally vested into the conversation. I have other follow up lines with this - but think about the power it conveys -

- Women are afraid of men acting weird, or stalking them. By telling her this right away it says 'I wont stalk you, heck you strike me as a little unbalanced yourself.'

- You suddenly 'frame her' as the one desperate to be with you - it appears like you understand what's really going underneath.

If she escalates - you escalate right with her. As you're walking off, slowly, you continue to say anti stalking things - 'look you seem like a SWEET girl, lets just part as friends - I've had alot of women stalk me in the past, and see where this could be heading'

She might even turn back to her friends and pretend to ignore you - but you've had the last laugh.

What will come of all this? Well often her friends will start to laugh, at her. They have even approached me later apologizing for their 'out of control, bitchy' friend because they thought you were so damn funny.

Can't tell you how many times I've pulled that out with winning results.

At the very least, it prevents you from slinking away like a loser. Ultimately, it demonstrates that your reality is so strong, you see that all women out there could potentially desire you so much that they lose control. That's a VERY strong, winning frame to carry with you on the social scene.

Why? Guess it's because it includes several components of attraction - excitement, playful sexual intrigue, challenge and comfort.Wrestling...comfortable? Sure. Its all part of telling a woman I can be playful exerting force against you, but not in a way that will hurt you. We might even get carried away, throw each other around, but it's scrappy fun, not done in anger or meant to inflict pain.
I remember a wedding I went to a couple years ago. I hit it off with this woman, friend of the bride's. We were both in relationships, but we had fun getting to know each other. We were at the head table together, danced a couple times.
After the wedding there was a casual post-party in one of the hotel rooms. We had some drinks, a CD player with tunes. She wanted to dance with me again. This time she lunged onto me. We spun around, through the doorway and fell onto the floor. My head came down within an inch of a table! We were laughing so hard, didn't phase us at the time.
Now nothing was to come of it - we were all just hanging out. The point is...women love to wrestle. It tells you they are very comfortable with you. Don't be scared. Pretend to put up a good fight.
Then let her win.

My thoughts on the day -

It's a half-empty half-full scenario, for us single people, regardless of what stage of singledom we might be in.

How so?

More breakups occur on or around Valentines Day (possible second to Christmas) than any other time of the year.

The commercials pound us poor souls to make you believe that if you don't lay it out in a big way this time, it's over. So to take the word of advertisers, one must treat 'their sweetie' to the nicest restaurant in the city, and give them a large overstuffed teddy bear and jewelry (even better if the jewelry is wrapped around the bear.)

Truth is, some of my best Valentines Day events came up quite unexpectedly. Thought I'd share a few with you, offer some guidance and expectation setting:

A couple years ago I was invited to a singles potluck party on Friday Feb 13. Wasn't dating anyone at the time. Met a woman there and hit it off, but to ask her out on a date, a first date, for valentines day would've been overboard. However I did have plans for Valentine's Day. One of my colleagues from work was a romantic writer, part of a local romance writers club that was doing a program at the local Barnes and Noble. I and other colleagues wanted to attend as a show of support. So I shared that info with the girl from the party, told her to call me if she'd like to catch it with me, no big deal. Next day she did, called and showed up. We attended the event and had coffee afterwards. The program was pretty sassy (wow us men have nothing on women in the erotic department). Afterwards we walked around the lakefront, I wished her a happy valentines day and departed. Very lovely. Very simple. And very appropriate for a first date on Valentines Day.

About ten years ago I happened to be at a trade show in New Orleans around Valentines Day. Also the weekend prior to Fat Tuesday (happens every twenty years or so that way). I met a cute woman from Finland, in town for the event. We hit it off, decided to see the city together. We hit it off, and had fun with the holiday. Don't recall any gifts being exchanged, other than maybe taking turns buying each other drinks.

Get the theme? The event itself brings about special activities that are great and rewarding - and terrific to be involved in. Much more memorable than any chotchy gift or dinner to try and make the evening 'special.' Doing something offbeat, unexpected (and LIGHT) will be alot more fun. And memorable.

Put yourself in a situation this year to take advantage of what your city, events, have to offer. Pick up a city weekly paper and make a commitment to check out an event, any event. If you're single, go alone. It's fine - lots of other single people going alone will probably be there too. If you're dating someone and its appropriate to take them along - great, do so.

If you're casually dating someone or more than one - hmm, well that's tricky. My advice is if you haven't made plans before Valentines day, it wouldn't be cool to do it the day of. Send her an email with a funny picture, telling her what your plans are, that you plan to check out this really cool exhibit, event, etc., and wish her a great valentines day. But I would agree with the advice of other's in this coaching space -

Valentine's Day is a terrible day to decide to take things 'to the next level.'

It should be a natural extension of your relationship - whatever stage it might be in. If you wouldn't do such a thing (amazing dinner, gifts) on any other day, don't do it on this day, just because you're both here and its valentines day.

Trust me. If the feelings expressed or gestures aren't sincere, you won't be doing anyone any favors.

Enjoy the day. Make a plan to catch an event. If you're dating someone, they will enjoy something offbeat/unique on this day. Don't go overboard.

You'll thank me later.

Okay, so I've been having great luck with you ice-breaker system. For that, many thanks bro!

The question I've got for you now, in a word, is 'what next?'

Let's really boil this down to the basics - if you are a great, interesting guy, you don't need to ornament things by 'wining/dining.'

With the summer coming up, there's always fun stuff to do outdoors. Catch the fireworks. Go to a street festival. Go window shopping!

Girls will call me up all the time, just to get together and do whatever. Watch TV.

In the past, I too used to get caught into those traps. Once in, its hard to get out. One of the worst cases occurred a few years ago. Quick Answer: As soon as you've been given an opening to use it.

The best opening a girl will give you is the simple question, 'So what do you do?'

It's a great lead in. One of the best. The best way to leverage the ass model routine is to do it 'IN RESPONSE' to her requests, not to introduce it yourself. It's alot more subtle (if this concept is too subtle - think of the guy that has a picture of himself on top of his cheesy motorcyle or hotrod in his online dating profile. Almost a universal turnoff to women to see that up front. Much better for women to 'DISCOVER' that you happen to drive a cycle or cool car. However you can position yourself to have such great qualities 'DISCOVERED.'

So...if you don't get the lead in question. By the time you are at the palm reading stage, you will need to introduce it, to get them to bite. When the girl is impressed with your palm reading, say 'yeah, pretty impressive for an ass model, hunh?'

That should get them to respond, and usually does. They will say something like, 'excuse me, did you say you were an ass model?' 'Yeah right - you model your ass.'

Then...roll your eyes and RELUCTANTLY pull out your ass model business card, complete with a fun email address and website (mine is 'myassismygift.com, myass_ismygift@yahoo.com)

Are you really going to call every girl? What's worse - did you get them all from the same bar? If so - you might as well just throw those odd pieces of paper into the trash.

If it's a night out for practice - that's good, and to be encouraged. It's your reality, you're taking on your social life on your terms. And if getting the skills up to speed is where you are at right now - that's awesome. You closed well with ten girls.

Now let's talk 'quality over quantity.'

Once you've mastered the system, you will want to pull out your routine for just the right occassion. I never do the routine more twice in the same bar, in the same evening. Why? Because it turns into just that - nothing more than a mechanical routine that everyone takes notice of - sees you're just out getting numbers. Looks REAL bad.

Set your sights. If you close with someone you really clicked with - that's fabulous! Great for you! Call it an evening - take her on to another bar, or plan to follow up later. Regarding your question - I believe it can be used in nearly any situation, having tried these techniques in many social settings. By that I mean - on trains, in elevators, running into people on the street. These can be tougher, only in that people are usually either more preoccupied or seemingly closed off here. But these techniques are so compelling, because they do touch on all eight elements of attraction, right away.

Best part about these ice breakers is that you are given props to lean on as you roll up and meet people. You aren't going to hit it off with every person you meet, every time. Just like any skill, it takes practice! I tried your ice breaker technique after reading through the book - my first night out at a bar, I was playing with the waitress, then a couple cute girls just hanging out. It was if they were just waiting for something fun to happen, and there I was, ready to break the ice!

So my question is - how far to take these steps. Do I need to run through all three steps of the system, or even more?

Hey Steve -

Great question. The system we've provided you offers a logical progression, designed to build enough attraction in your target to leave with what we call a 'follow up opportunity.' This follow up opportunity can continue right then and there by going out to another place, even your place, or for a phone call/email exchange to make plans to get together at another time. The choice is really up to you, based on the situation (group dynamics, time, place, vibe).

Further, while the bunny trick should always be the starter, you shouldn't feel you need to go any further. Gauge the situation. I like to go into the P (of the BPA system) when other girls there in the group might feel 'left out.' Invariably they will ask to see the magic trick again. Read this that there's interest - and you've got other material in your bag of tricks to take the discussion further. What's great about palm reading is that its one of the few things you can do to present and explain/teach at the same time, and requires no more prop than a woman's hand.

That said: The goal for you is simple. You are driving for her to express interest. The easiest expression of interest is for her to ask you. 'what do you do?' That's the golden ticket to me. As soon as she asks 'what do you do?' I tell her I'm an ass model. I might bypass the palm reading altogether, go right into talking about my work as an ass model. Because then I conclude the topic by giving her my 'ass model' business card, tell her she is free to call or write me, perhaps we might even meet up for a drink or coffee, as long as she doesn't 'stalk me.'

See what happened? I assumed she wants to know more about me, even assumed she will want to call or write, and get together. And I KNOW she will follow up. Why? Sounds like you've got some bigger issues to deal with than practicing this system, and I'm not talking about said 'weight' problem (at least not physically).

What I mean is that I think confidence comes from your mental attitude. A common situation I find helpful is with short men, often told they have something of a 'Napoleon complex.' Think about guys you know - I knew many shorter men who came across so confident, fun and in the moment that they drew people to them. Their height made no difference.

The great thing about weight is that it is something you can work on, get handled (at least easier than height!) So if you think that's a problem for you - get your butt in the gym. You'll see improvement after dedicating yourself to a program within weeks.

But onto the ass model concept for you - yes, you can absolutely use it. Successfully! Why? Because it subtlely says to women - 'I see myself as a sexy, great man.' I see myself that way - you should too. That's a powerful statement to subcommunicate.

But let's just play it out - you say you're an ass model, pull out your confidence/fun card. Say a girl laughs. How do you know if she's laughing at you or with you? Most of the time women laugh - often both (with and at) - for me, that's the 'sweetspot.' My confidence overrules any harassing - and women love to tease. So go with it! Good question. My answer to this, again unlike most magic tricks, is that the fun and secret isn't blown by repeating it. If other girls express interest - that's terrific! Palm reading is a great way to involve everyone - comparing palms - telling girls one has alot more 'codependency' issues than the other, etc. One is an older sould than others. These are great. The one thing I'd caution you is not to 'overdo it' - don't ever overstay you're welcome. Remember that you control the agenda. You have a goal in mind - to close the loop, get a phone number (or better yet to give your card to the girl you're interested in to have her call you) - so keep things moving. As long as the vibe is good - you should be fine!

Clothing is like many other parts of your life - its a reflection of you in the moment, of your lifestyle. And that's how it comes across.

Think of it in reverse - you go out to a club and see girls. Some are dressed sexy, loose dance tops, nice makeup and hair, others looking plain and frumpy. Who gets your interest? Girls operate the same way.

I believe you can get yourself to at least a 6-7 on a scale of ten with great clothes. Sure - wearing great clothes means being on top of current trends. What's in style now is different than even a couple years ago. I don't agree with the idea of 'just going with the classics.' That tells people you simply 'like to play it safe.'

A couple years ago striped shirts were really in style. The designs got wilder and more colorful - sort of peaked this summer. Right now the hottest style on men is embroidered, patterned shirts. They take some care in wear and cleaning, but they are very attractive.

Retail outlets are just now picking up on this trend - but be discriminating. Look for unique designs, get a sense of what they are saying.

I was in a boutique outside Phoenix this week that had some interesting designed shirts. Problem was I didn't agree with their message. They all were some variation of 'RASpect.' (As in Rastapharian. Smoke doobies and overthrow the government, man.)

Love Bob Marley. Don't want to make a reggae statement.

Another great trend right now for men is to wear unique t-shirts over oxfords or thermal tops. I've seen thermal tops all over clubs - I think they are a little too casual to look good in clubs, but the t-shirt concept is great. I love to wear my 'official ass model' shirt over a thermal.

Cars are alot like clothes. They say alot about you with you ever opening up your mouth.

We've talked about how women process things implicitly. (Men think and process explicitly, meaning they are direct, clear. Women read meanings and interpret nearly everything around them. Doesn't make them smarter or better, just fundamentally different in this regard.)

A car is something a woman will want to see when the time is right. And it can certainly impress a woman if it conveys a certain lifestyle - freewheeling, fun, stylish. So yeah, if you're single - why not have a sportscar.

If that's not possible (for financial or practical reasons), your car should be clean and maintained (meaning without serious dents or broken parts).

Here's a reality check: Dating costs money. It's something you need to budget for, just like other items in your life. Before making a concious decision to date, why not get your financial house in order first? Take the next couple months to get anchored in your job, square up on whatever bills you have, get some money in the bank, then think about dating.

Doesn't mean you have to be a monk - in fact the best thing right now is to make some new friends. Guys, gals - doesn't matter. But don't think about dating. If an opportunity comes up to meet a girl for coffee or a drink, great. But be good to yourself right now - create a viable plan, work it and be patient. You'll have alot more fun when you are ready to date, financially.

If this is too abstract, permit me to give you a real-world situation (meaning - this really happened, a couple years ago, to a friend of mine). A friend of mine was in dire straits financially. Very bad shape. Yet he wanted to go out, take girls out. He was the kind of guy who seemed to make a decent first impression, so getting first dates seemed to come easily for him. Anyway he takes this girl out to dinner, asked her out, the check comes and his credit card comes back declined for the bill. He has to ask this girl on his first date to pay for the meal!

What's worse - he thinks all's good, can't understand why she won't return his calls. Tells us he told her that he left her a voicemail, wanting to 'make it up to her.' She probably thought, 'What's the point? What am I, stupid?' You don't have enough money to pick up the tab for a date you arranged.

If credit cards aren't your bag (some guys prefer to manage their funds tightly) - fine. Be sure to have enough cash on hand.

Shortcomings come up - people go through rough times. They're just alot less forgivable on the first date, when such an error will give your date all the information she needs to know.

I've got a story, and a question - so I was out the other night, hitting some clubs with some buddies. My friends knew I had mastered your ice breaker technique, and had had some success with it. So they decide they are now to lazy to roll up and meet girls themselves, they now leave it up to me!

I've had the same arguement with friends in the past too. Same thing.

Know what I told them? 'What - you were thinking you'd just sit back while I brought girls to your bedpost? Suppose you were hoping for some help there too.'

Back to your issue - you're doing great. Making things happen. I'd suggest keeping your funky wingmen around, perhaps for Football Sunday afternoons, so you can meet up and talk about how great your weekend was. Otherwise, leave them out of your social calendar. They won't be doing you any bit of good.

You don't need charity cases for friends. Friends are equals - there's reciprocation. Don't see any there - don't cut them off; just remove their 'pickup privleges.'

I really want you to think about this. It's important.

I'm not coming at you with some lame 'PMA' (positive mental attitude) junk.

A trap guys can easily fall into with the ice breaker feats is one of 'approval seeking.' By that, I mean you are doing these tricks to get the amazement and positive feedback, even validation of others. That's entirely the wrong frame.

These are ice breakers; a way to get yourself planted in front of strangers with some common platform of rappoire. But perhaps more important - it's a test. It's a test you are administering, to determine who's fun and worth your time, and who's not.

Who cares how pretty these girls are. You shouldn't. If they are over the top bratty (by that I mean they get out of hand with their behavior) - they are simply not worth you time. So what - you've invested 30 seconds in a magic trick up front. You've learned in that 30 seconds that you need to move on, spend your time with women who will dig your vibe, not make you look and feel like a dope.

An funny thing happened on the way to the Long Beach Airport.

I've been thinking alot about what occurred to me this weekend - certainly the pragmatic aspects, details I have left to resolve to get things back on track and squared away. But also of the things that worked, worked very well, inspite of a daunting incident.

I realized that much of my life coaching training, in social dynamics and in approaching people came to play at the right moment, skills I've practiced and honed for several years that helped to make the best of a bad situation.

It might be best to relay the facts, then spend some time reflecting on specifics and insights.

I went to Los Angeles for New Year's weekend. Drove my own car from Phoenix Thursday, to meet up with friends that evening for a surprise party, then meet up with friends the next evening at our hotel in Redondo Beach, where a hotel dance party would be held New Year's Eve. We did something similar last year - lots of fun, safe, and worth doing again.

I went to pick up my friend at the Long Beach airport mid Friday afternoon. I got there abit early, as her flight was arriving abit late. I circled around the airport boulevard, and as I made my way around to the outskirts of the airport boulevard I was pulled over by a policewoman.

She pulled me over because of an apparent lapse in my vehicle registration. I have a temporary registration for my car posted on my car, awaiting final tags from DMV which are running a couple of weeks late (supposed to receive earlier this month), however DMV told me my paperwork, along with the temporary posted registration, would suffice until I received the tags.

Apparently not. The policewoman detained me for a time, checking her car computer and came back told me all she could see was that my registration was, 'in process,' even conceeding that it takes time for DMV to process and update records. I thought that made sense, I might receive a warning ticket and be on my way. Seemed we were in sync up to that point.

Another officer came up to assist her, that's when things began to get a little strange. He asked me to get out of my car, frisked me for weapons, and went into my car to look for additional paperwork. His demeanor was aggressive, asking me the reasonable questions about having any weapons, finding anything in my car that would cause me trouble. Yet he persisted with this tone, while clearly detaining me, occupying me while the policewoman finished her paperwork in the car.

After a time he even said 'looks like just some things you've got to get cleared up with DMV - you should be able to get on your way soon, but its really up to her. (good cop-bad cop)

She came back, had me sign a ticket for an expired registration and then impounded my car. The tow truck came, and took my car away. Fortunately I was a five minute walk away from meeting my friend at the airport - we had to reshuffle our plans abit, I needed to cut my trip short abit on the back end to get back to Phoenix, but otherwise was largely not impacted. New Year's eve plans came together and we had one of the best, safe, fun weekends ever.

So that's the short story, with a couple of insights.

Truth be told: It was clear to me while I was waiting, sitting on the curb, based on arbitrary (disconnect between paper and computer records) -yet-darkening (police temperament)circumstances, I could've been facing something much more serious - and how vulnerable a position I was in.

It was clear that an inappropriate response, or any other glitch one might otherwise overlook for a fun weekend, and I would've been thrown in a city jail, with no resolution until at least January 3rd (Tuesday; the first day the city offices are open again.) A free, four-day visit to the city clink. Not to mention the inconvenience and grief it would've caused my friends and situation it would've put others in.

For me - an interesting moment of clarity came to me. The Serenity Prayer, of all things. I can't control the situation right here, the irate police people, the circumstances and timing, perhaps even having my car impounded. But these matters are recoverable. At least I'm still free to meet my friend and follow through with our weekend plans with some adjustments. But if I overreacted, or even acted cocky or smart, this man detaining me could trump up enough to haul me off. I all I had left in my control...was my behavior.

That's where my skills as a PUA came into play. He would bait me with strange questions - 'What's this superglue tube doing in your car? You a glue sniffer?' I paused, then bored him with how my sunglasses broke and had tried to repair them that morning.

I was probably detained a total of about 30 minutes, knowing my friend was waiting for me to pick her up. I asked if I could have him obtain my cellphone in the car so I could just call her, let her know I was going to need a few minutes. He said, 'okay - you're not going to call any of your homey friends around here to try and put a cap in me?' He knew from my license and description of my events I was from out of town, but I said casually, but matter of factly, 'no - I just think it would help to give her a quick call.'

Then he asked what I was doing in town, where I was planning to go. I said 'my friend and I are meeting some others for the weekend at a hotel in Redondo Beach.' He said, 'what - that's it? You're just going to a hotel to hang out?' I said, 'no - they have an event there this weekend.'

Earlier on he would cut me off by saying, 'just answer yes or no.' But his questions were leading, so I was very decisive in my answers, then paused, and added more detail to cooperate.

While we were waiting I opened up the discussion, but careful to build rappoire on topics that wouldn't lead us into trouble. He asked about my car - since the car was obviously the source of our conflict I answered the questions, but then talked with him about the airport. How cool it was - small, efficient, looked like it had a really fun restaurant upstairs.

So by the time the female policewoman came out - I could tell I had someone who would possibly come to my defense, or at least not want to escalate the matter further.

Who would've thought - my learnings on becoming a great guy would help me out of a strange scrape with the police. But that's why I decided to share this sorted tale.

At the risk of saying too much about my friends, in particular my friend I picked up - the weekend would not have been what it was without her support and kindness. Something to consider when you pick a partner - who's going to be there to lean on when you need it. Like it or not, no matter how strong our situation, we all fall down.

Commit yourself in the new year, to seek out a partner who will not only bring out your best qualities, but be there to provide calm and comfort when you maybe at your most vulnerable.

Dating is funny. We talk a lot about putting your best foot forward. Yet it's how one deals with adversity and difficulty, that doesn't build character; it reveals it. To yourself, and others.

Not that I'd wish that pre-NYE scenario on anyone.

A final footnote on the situation: I opted to fly back to Phoenix, regroup and determine next steps. I'm an adult; I need to resolve this matter myself. Well wouldn't you know it: In my mail, I received a letter from the DMV. It told me that the final issuance of tags would be immediately provided, pending payment of some outstanding parking ticket!

Pay the parking ticket, clear the whole matter right up.

Great - thanks for telling me three months later. (Well, that, and a return trip to Long Beach to get my car out of impound..)

LONDON (AFP) - A British man is giving a whole new meaning to begging to be loved as he set off on a 55-mile (88.5 kilometres) crawl on his hands and knees to find a partner.

With a sign saying "Could you Love Me?" strapped to his back and 18 boxes of chocolates trailing behind him on string tied to his wrists and ankles, Mark McGowan began his unusual quest to find a girlfriend.

His route will take him from the site of the Tabard Inn, in Southwark, south London, to Canterbury Cathedral, following the pilgrims' trail made famous in 14th century author Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales".

The 37-year-old performance artist, who said he is also hoping to raise awareness of people left lonely and isolated during the festive period, is hoping to complete the back-breaking task within 30 days.

"I can remember one Christmas I wasn't in a relationship and didn't want to spend it with my family. I ended up cooking two fish fingers. I'm sure a lot of people have had that experience," he said during a well-earned break en-route.

"Some people can spend Christmas in utter desperation and misery and find it difficult to cope with. I hope this encourages people to maybe invite someone over."

McGowan, from Peckham, south London, is no stranger to bizarre stunts or being so close to the tarmac: in 2003 he spent two weeks rolling a monkey nut with his nose seven miles to Downing Street to protest against student debt.

Earlier this year he attempted to cartwheel 57 miles from Brighton to London to highlight the problem of people taking stones from beaches to decorate their gardens. He was forced to give up with a twisted back after four days.

And in 2002, he rolled across London singing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" in an attempt to get people to be nicer to cleaners.

On May 5 this year -- polling day for Britain's general election -- he planted 100,000 kisses on a laminated picture of Prime Minister Tony Blair.

McGowan is single.

Didn't bother me at all! Being a single, straight man in San Francisco is like the best protected minority there is. (Truth is there are lots of single straight men out in SF, just like lots of people who dont live in TeePees or work at Rodeos in Phoenix, or are part of the mob in Chicago.)

My response? 'Sure I'm gay. I'm a lesbian, trapped in a man's body.'

Watching women untangle that one is worth the price of admission. A) You don't fight them, ergo you pass their test, B) You communicate sexuality, implicitly C) It's just a damn funny line.

My line - feel free to use it. (In fact I got a great shirt from Urban Outfitters that says, "I Like Girls Who Like Girls." Love to where that out. Good times.

Two final thoughts on responding to one of women's favorite comments to a fashionable man - A) You'd be amazed at how often that question comes out of women's mouths B) IT HAS VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH YOU, EXCEPT THAT YOU HAVE EFFECTIVELY STOLEN A WOMAN'S FRAME, WHICH AT A DEEP DARK LEVEL WOMEN FIND THREATHENING, AND CHALLENGING.

Response? Keep up the good work.

Let's look at this another way. Go to any trendy nightclub in a big city. Check out the guy seeming to get the most attention. He's probably dressed pretty great - I don't mean just good clothes, but VERY unique, VERY distinctive.

So let's not get so worried about hearing that comment. Take the time to understand what's really behind it, and don't take that as a threat. Realize you're doing great.

Now that said...there are certainly distinctive gay looks. Lots of leather and chains. Overly butch/masculine attire, or on the other extreme extremely feminine attire. Those are extremes probably best to stay away from, if you are a single straight man.

Fact is most gay men don't dress that way, ever. And what do you know, there are gay men out there who don't have a clue how to dress either.

All very silly concerns, just another layer of reluctance to take a leap into self improvement.

Now that we've dismissed those concerns, let's talk about looking great, stylish, sexy...for yourself first, which in turn appeals to women.

Don't Browbeat. Don't let yourself be browbeaten.

It's a trap so many of us get into. And it comes up in many shapes and sizes.

A girl doesn't want to date you. You don't want to date her. You or her have said your peace. Kudos for having the courage to come out and say that, and not just flaking out (the basic premise behind the best-selling book 'He's Just Not That Into You.' required reading for women to decode men.)

Why do people prefer to flake? Because they have tried the honest route in the past, and it led to browbeating. Grief. Guilt.

"Why would you want to leave me?" "Do you think you'll find anyone out there better than me?" "You'll be really sorry if you break up with me. I won't take you back if you break up with me now." Even the "You're so pathetic!" Sound familiar?

Let it go. Hopefully if you're in the situation (we all have been) the other will express regret, which is totally appropriate, without browbeating.
